President Obama looks to abandon his usual games of golf or pick-up basketball — at least temporarily — later this week in favor of fishing.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina told the New York Times Thursday that the president would try his hand at fishing during a trip to Montana.

"I am going to have the great opportunity later this week," Messina said. "I'm going to take the leader of the free world fishing. And I plan to talk a little bit about public access."

Messina is a former chief of staff to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D), another Montanan.

Obama has attracted some attention for golfing more consistently throughout the spring and summer on military bases here in D.C.

SO, REALLY GEARING UP FOR MY MONTANA TRIP, GOOGLED IT LAST NITE ON THE SATELLITE LINK AND WAS ABLE TO LOCATE MY LONELY CABIN UP IN THE MOUNTAINS. I WILL EVENTUALLY TOUCH 7 STATES ON MY JOURNEY--CA, NE, AZ, UT, WY, IDAHO, AN MT. RENTING THE SUV TOMORROW, GOT ALL THE MEDS, DIAPERS, WHEELCHAIRS-INDOOR/OUTDOOR AND TAMPONS ---AND THATS JUST FOR ME!! ok, so their for deedee my doggie. got the fly fishing gear, boots, insect repellant, lotions, and all sort of this and that. building a bike rack for the back of the suv and some sort of waterproof bedding for the doggies for the long haul. i plan to tackle the approx 1100 miles in two legs--AND BELIEVE ME-MY LEGS WILL BE TIRED LUGGING ALL THAT SHIT AROUND.!! HO, I MEAN TWO SEGMENTS OF ABOUT 550 EACH. fillmore, utah is equal distance between l.a. and bozeman. the doggies and i will camp out there on saturday and leave early sunday on the other 8 hour haul to bozeman, and as some of you know, it might take me another 3 hours once i get into bozeman to find my cabin--EVEN WITH MY GPS!
