HAITI

The Daily Wrap - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

EVENTS LIKE THIS AND LIKE WHATS HAPPENING IN IRAN ALWAYS REMIND ME IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT I HAVE IT PRETTY PRETTY DAMN GOOD HERE IN THE GOOD OLD USA.

YEA, I CAN SAY--AS MOST ALL OF US CAN, THAT LIFE IS CRAPPY SOMETIMES-- AND THEN GET DRESSED AND GO OUT TO DINNER. BUT IN HAITI RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE NO HOME, HAVE NO CLOTHING BUT WHATS ON THEIR BACKS, AND NOT A DIME TO GO OUT TO DINNER--EVEN IF THEY HAD A RESTAURANT THAT STILL WAS STANDING.

I'VE BEEN WATCHING ALL I CAN AND IT AMAZES ME THAT I HAVE YET TO SEE THE HAITIAN GOVERNMENT, THE MILITARY, THE POLICE, OR ANYONE CONNECTED TO THE GOVERNMENT OUT IN THE STREETS DOING WHAT YOU EXPECT OF YOU LEADERS. THE PRIME MINISTER COMES ON THE TUBE AND CLAIMS THAT HE TOO IS HOMELESS--THAT MEANS HE'S GOING FROM HIS PALACE TO THE HYATT DOWN THE STREET--WHAT A SHAME FOR THIS PERSON TO COMPARE HIS SITUATION TO THAT OF HIS FELLOW CITIZENS.
